Platelet Rich Plasma Treatments

A non-surgical approach to treating injuries and chronic pain.

When a body becomes injured, a natural healing process occurs to heal the damaged tissue. The body signals platelets and other components in our blood supply to migrate to the area of injury. Under normal conditions, these platelets release a variety of proteins called growth factors that initiate and promote healing. When an injury or condition does not heal properly, it becomes the "new normal" which means the healing process ceases and the injury/condition becomes chronic. New advancements in medicine have been developed to harness a body's own platelets to be available in injectable form. This can then be used to treat these issues with amazing, lasting results.

As soon as SELPHYL® - prepared PRFM is administered, growth factors are released through the formation of a three dimensional cross-linked fibrin matrix which is essential to the platelet plug as it serves as a binding site for both platelets and growth factors allowing their sustained release.

This scaffolding (fibrin matrix) localizes the growth factors increasing their concentration at the desired location and guiding tissue regeneration. Studies have shown that platelet growth factors are released for up to seven days, supporting collagen production and increased vascularization, which results in overall skin improvements.

We then increase the length of this healing process by performing Homeopathic Ozone injections to the site within one week of the treatment to continue with the healing and repair process.

Recommendations are for one more set of the Homeopathic Ozone injections one to two weeks after that to ensure that maximum healing is achieved.

How it works-

Considered the next generation in PRP treatment, we are excited to offer Selphyl's advanced PRP to PRFM (Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix) system at our clinic.

PRP can be used to treat these conditions:

  • Disc Herniations

  • Sciatica

  • Degenerative Joint Disease

  • ACL/MCL Partial Tear

  • Rotator Cuff Issues

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Tennis elbow

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Hair loss

  • Plantar Fasciitis

....and these are just a few examples!

The SELPHYL® System that we use in our clinic provides the exact amount of Calcium Chloride to PRP producing Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix. Other systems produce PRP, not PRFM. Fibrin matrix creates a barrier to localize platelets to the site of injection and allows for sustained growth factor release and migration of stem cells, which leads to cartilage repair and regeneration.

The SELPHYL® System quickly and safely prepares Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) from a small blood sample, eliminating contamination and operator variability. It converts PRP into PRFM, creating a protective scaffold for platelets.

SELPHYL® PRFM is the next generation of PRP.

Answers to commonly asked questions:

WHAT IS THE PROCESS?

Blood is drawn from a vein in the patient's arm just like when giving blood for a lab test or blood donation. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge in order to separate the red blood cells from the plasma. The plasma, rich in platelets, is then injected into the area of injury.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?

The entire procedure takes about 20 minutes to perform.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREPARE FOR THE PROCEDURE?

Drink plenty of water before the treatment to help with a quick and easy blood draw. It is also recommended that you wear loose clothing that will ensure that the area to be treated is easily accessed.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?

The number of treatments needed depends on each individual patient, the desired outcome, and your doctor’s treatment plan. Most injuries usually require only one PRP treatment and the two follow up Homeopathic Ozone injection treatments to achieve maximum healing. Based on the extent and age of the injury, there may be additional treatments needed due to a build-up of scar tissue or inflammation.

IS THE TREATMENT PAINFUL?

Unlike other PRP products that are acidic (low pH), SELPHYL® PRFM has close to physiologic pH. There may be some temporary discomfort during the injections. Like all injection procedures, one can experience occasional redness and bruising immediately following the treatment that resolves quickly.

CAN ANYONE BE ALLERGIC TO SELPHYL®?

There is virtually no risk of allergic reaction. The SELPHYL® PRFM System is used to rapidly collect and isolate a patient’s own PRFM for injection and contains no animal or synthetic products.

DO I HAVE TO TAKE IT EASY AFTER A PRP TREATMENT?

In most cases, you can return to your normal activities of daily living immediately following a PRP treatment. Some people may find that the area that was treated feels as though it is bruised, which is common with this kind of treatment. The recommendation is to listen to your body and understand that the healing process will take time, but wonderful things are happening as soon as the PRP is injected into the area of injury.

WHAT SHOULD I AVOID?

After receiving a PRP treatment, it is recommended for you to not take any NSAIDS like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, or Celecoxib for at least 3 days because it can limit the efficacy of the treatment.

Consult with Dr. Alsop to discuss any questions or concerns to ensure the best possible outcome for your treatment.
